Nice
GO GUIDE

Once overshadowed by resort towns on the French Riviera, the region’s gateway city of Nice is has come into the spotlight in recent years, thanks to a burgeoning creative scene, a few cool hotels, and a long art history (it was once home to Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall). It's a good base if you want to be within walking distance to cool restaurants and bars, and within driving distance to charming towns including Saint Paul de Vence and Èze.

mustGoLa Guinguette du Couvent

For alfresco dining, there are few better spots than this hilltop garden restaurant at the Hôtel du Couvent. The picturesque restaurant serves simple but perfectly executed seasonal cuisine (incorporating produce from the hotel’s farm), making it perfect for a quiet, leisurely lunch with a view of the city and coastline.

mustGoLe Bistrot des Serruriers

This chic bistrot—owned by the folks behind Hôtel du Couvent, but located down the street from the hotel—is one of the best spots in the city for chic design and classic French small plates. We love it for a dinner of easy local dishes—ouefs mayo, pissaladerière, rabbit terrine, and more.

mustGoMatisse Museum

The beautiful museum—set in a striking red mansion—boasts one of the largest collections of French painter Henri Matisse's art (the painter lived in Nice for a long time).
